Zagreb EU – Western Balkans Summit, CSO Declaration ready for signing

Considering this year’s circumstances, due to the Corona crisis outbreak, the EU Western Balkan Summit under the Croatian Presidency will take place online on 6 May 2020.

Western Balkans Summit in Zagreb had been prioritized as one of the main events of the Croatian Council Presidency, aimed at gathering the leaders of the EU and the region to discuss the Western Balkans path and future towards the EU. Considering this year’s circumstances, due to the Corona crisis outbreak, the EU Western Balkan Summit under the Croatian Presidency will take place online on 6 May 2020. In order for the voice and the message of the CSOs in the region to be taken into consideration, the Croatian civil society platform CROSOL had planned to organize a shadow summit on this occasion. Although the CSOs shadow summit has now been canceled, the CSOs in the region coordinated by CROSOL, drafted a declaration through which CSOs will be sending a message to the EU leaders participating in the Summit.

BCSDN and some of its members took a part in the drafting of the declaration together with other CSOs from the region: CROSOL – Croatian Platform for International Citizens Solidarity, Human Rights House Zagreb, Documenta – Center for Dealing with the past, Civil Rights Defenders, Belgrade Center for Security Policy, Helsinki Committees for Human Rights from North Macedonia and Albania, Institute for Democracy Societas Civilis Skopje, Initiative for the monitoring of EU integration of BiH, Politikon Network and Sbunker.

You can read and sign the declaration on this link: https://crosol.hr/eupresidency/en/zg-cso-declaration-on-eu-western-balkans/

We invite all interested to sign the declaration and share it among your networks until Tuesday, May 5th, 9am. The declaration will be publicly released later that day.

Thank you for your effort, and we are looking forward to contributing to a stronger and unified CSOs’ voice and overall civil society role in the Western Balkans road toward the EU.
